Welder specimen testing
Testing of weld specimens for welder qualification exam as per PN-EN ISO 9606
Welding work should be carried out by holders of a “Training certificate”, or a “Welder qualification certificate”, or a “Welder’s Logbook”.
The competent authorities entitled to carry out welder qualification exams and licensing of welders in Poland include the Office for Technical Inspection (UDT), the Institute of Welding, TÜV.
At the moment, a welder certification can be obtained upon completion of a training program and passing an appropriate exam (theoretical and practical), which are then renewed for subsequent 2- or 3-year periods.
At the moment, welder exams are conducted in accordance with the following standards:
PN-EN ISO 9606-1:2017-10 - Qualification testing of welders — Fusion welding — Part 1: Steels
PN-EN ISO 9606-2:2007 - Qualification test of welders — Fusion welding — Part 2: Aluminium and aluminium alloys
PN-EN ISO 9606-3:2001 - Approval testing of welders — Fusion welding — Part 3: Copper and copper alloys
PN-EN ISO 9606-4:2001 - Approval testing of welders — Fusion welding — Part 4: Nickel and nickel alloys
PN-EN ISO 9606-5:2002 - Approval testing of welders — Fusion welding — Part 5: Titanium and titanium alloys, zirconium and zirconium alloys
PN-EN 287-6:2018-06 - Qualification test of welders - Fusion welding - Part 6: Cast irons
Qualification of welding procedures
Qualification of welding procedures according to PN-EN ISO, ASME, DNV, AD 2000 MERKBLAT
In order to carry out qualification of welding procedures, it is necessary to produce weld specimens in advance, on the basis of which a preliminary Welding Procedure Specification (pWPS) is created. This is followed by the actual welding of the test joint and its validation through non-destructive and destructive testing, ending with the drafting of a Welding Procedure Qualification Report (WPQR). This is used as a basis for a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), which is the main document for proper welding work. A correct specification defines the welding tools, type of weld, welded specimen edge preparation, basic welding parameters, type of substrate and filler.
Welding procedure qualification takes place in accordance with the following standards:
PN-EN ISO 15614-1:2017-08 - Specification and qualification of welding procedures for metallic materials — Welding procedure test — Part 1: Arc and gas welding of steels and arc welding of nickel and nickel alloys
PN-EN ISO 15614-2:2008 - Specification and qualification of welding procedures for metallic materials — Welding procedure test — Part 2: Arc welding of aluminium and its alloys
